Koh Phangan
The Full Moon Party
Once a month. Haad Rin Beach. Tens of thousands of people.
The basics
What it is
The Full Moon Party is Koh Phangan's once-a-month, all-night beach party on Haad Rin Beach. It is the island's most famous event, and the reason many travelers first hear the name Koh Phangan. On party nights, tens of thousands of people gather on the sand for electronic music, fire shows, neon paint, beach bars, and dancing that runs until after sunrise. Go if you want the big, messy, high-energy version of the island. Skip it if you came only for quiet beaches, early nights, and the west coast rhythm. Phangan Cove is on Srithanu Beach, away from Haad Rin, so you can join the party without sleeping in the middle of it.

Decide
Should you go?
Yes, if…
- You are solo or with friends, 20s to early 30s, after the beach-party story.
- You want to see Haad Rin's Full Moon Party once, then leave it there.
- You are with friends and skipping a full-moon night would feel unfinished.
No, if…
- No if you want a quiet night - Haad Rin runs loud until sunrise.
- No if loud crowds, beach bars, and a sunrise finish sound exhausting.
- No if crowded Haad Rin beaches and late-night taxis sound more stressful than fun.
If you're going
If you're going
Full Moon is doable from Phangan Cove, but treat it as a late-night trip across the island. Haad Rin is around 30-40 minutes from Srithanu by taxi or songthaew, more if the road backs up. Expect to pay around 300-500 THB one way and agree the fare before you leave, or ask reception to help arrange a pickup. Wear closed shoes or sturdy sandals. Bring cash for entry, drinks, food, and the ride back. Around 1,500-2,500 THB is usually enough for the night, with entry around 200 THB at the beach gate. Take a zipped pocket or waterproof pouch for your phone. Leave passports, bank cards, jewellery, and anything hard to replace at the resort. Go if you want loud music, crowds, neon paint, fire shows, and a beach that gets messy after midnight. Skip it if you want a quiet night. Stay with your group, choose a meeting point, drink water, do not accept open drinks from strangers, and do not swim at night.
The quieter alternative
The quieter alternative
Phangan Cove is for guests who want the Full Moon Party within reach, not outside their room. Stay on Srithanu Beach on the west coast, take a taxi or songthaew to Haad Rin in around 30-40 minutes, then come back to the quieter side when you are done. Better if Full Moon is one night of your trip, not the whole reason for it. Less practical if you want to walk home at sunrise.
